The song "Something New" is the title track of our new EP that comes out today. And we're so excited to share this beautiful music with you, made in collaboration with some of my favorite musicians in the world, including John Medeski, who came in and put Hammond B3, Wurlitzer and piano on four of the five tracks on this album.
I'm so grateful for Sebastian Gonzalez, Debbie Yambala, and Juan Gallego, as well as our amazing Grammy-nominated producer, Zé Luis, one of my longest running friends and collaborators.
We finally give birth to it today. It is now out of our imagination, out of our bellies, and into your ears! We really hope that you'll share it with friends and spread the word, if you like it, because we, like many independent artists, do not really have much of a marketing budget, but we do have the network.
"Something New" was written in the middle of one of the darkest periods of COVID when I finally surrendered to the fact that I had lost my job, that I didn't know if the world was going to come back, I didn't know when I was going to get to see my family or even hug my friends. I luckily had my little dog, Rico, with me in my apartment, and I decided, well, there's no excuse now, I can be a full-time musician. And so I committed to a daily practice of writing and creating music.
I would start off with a meditation and during this particular day, I had a powerful realization that the most special and spiritual moments in my life happened when something new was emerging. Like something I'd never seen before, a person I'd never met before, or when I had arrived in a new place. And that something new is the marker of being completely present. And when we're experiencing something totally new, we have no idea what's going to happen. That is presence.
I actually wrote down "Something New" and underlined it in my journal. And then when I opened up the music project file for the song I'd been working on, I had actually titled the file "Something New."
I felt all this electricity go through my body and I go, "Oh, it's happening right now. I'm having a mystical 'Something New' experience." And so I literally just hit record, I didn't think, and I started singing. The whole second half of the song came through in one take: "Oh, you're something new..."
I knew I wanted to use that lyric in it, too, so it felt so transcendent and powerful. We later added on the other instruments, and when I completed the song, I sent it to the man I was thinking about while writing it—because many of my songs are love songs... if you haven't noticed!
I sent the song to Elliott LaRue, who I had asked out on a date right before COVID. Of course, we were too scared to meet, but we were talking on the phone a lot, and Elliott was one of the people who really kept me sane, kept me connected to my creativity and to my community.
So when it came time to record the track, I asked him to sing the backing vocals, so you can hear us singing together. And this song makes me so happy. It truly is a triumph over loneliness and sadness, and the creation of beautiful connection and love.
We came together with the Abracadabra band in New York and recorded these at Zé Luis's studio. We also were lucky enough to get my dear friend John Medeski to join us.
He actually asked me when we were prepping this, "You know, well, which—which instrument do you want me to use?" and I said, "All of them!"
Making this album was honestly the highlight of my pandemic experience. It's taken a few years to get it all completed and finally get it out into the world, and it feels very current, because it's a marker of healing, and a marker of our transcendence and victory over a really scary time.
We hope you enjoy "Something New" and the other songs on our 5-track EP. You can find it on any streaming service, it's out today. So, go listen and we hope you enjoy. Lots of love!
