ABOUT
Laura Newman
(mama earth)
Laura Newman is a voice of liberation and a multidimensional artist living in NYC. A prolific singer and songwriter, she opened 6 times for Neil Young. Her music renditions of the "1st Amendment" and the "Declaration of Occupy Wall Street" have become anthems for peace, heard on stages and in the streets around the globe. She has performed many times at House of Yes (NYC) and the Envision Festival (Costa Rica) as well as the Greek Theatre in Berkeley (US), Symbiosis (US), the Latitude Festival (UK), Conway Hall (UK), Burning Man and many more.
Laura recently recorded an album with pianist John Medeski and her band The Abracadabra Trip at Atelier Studios (producer Zé Luis Oliveira). The Abracadabra Trip is a mobile rock show on the roof of a bus, wowing unsuspecting crowds on the streets of NYC at iconic landmarks like Union Square, Central Park and in front of Madison Square Garden.
She performs regularly with DayBreaker, the morning dance party, and was recently featured on their AARP edition performing after the Weather Girls. She also was honored to sing at the Aretha Franklin tribute show at Joe's Pub in NYC.
Laura is masterful at freestyle and uses loopers and vocal effects pedals to make original songs on the spot. A storyteller and performance artist, she infuses theater, dance and activism to create spectacles that are memorable and moving. She is also a filmmaker and social / environmental justice activist who believes that art is a tool for transformation and healing.
She is a graduate of NYU’s Tisch School of The Arts.
